In this and similar passages, the memorization of the harmonic basis will form a secure foundation upon which other forms of memory may build.
54.   (Ill) Form and Progression of Elaboration.—The consider­ation of this, the last chief division of our subject, compels us at the outset to notice two distinct features. (1) The principle upon which the elaboration is formed, and (2) if such be in the form of a figure, repeated at regular intervals, the principle which governs its progress.
55.   Principle of Elaboration.—Such may be in accordance with one of the recognised forms of broken chords, as in the following extract:—
or it may be such as includes the employment of auxiliary notes alternated with essential notes, as in the "cadenza" of this same move­ment, where the outline in Ex. 28a is elaborated into Ex. 28, simply by the employment of what are technically called "changing notes," or auxiliary notes, employed both above and below the essential notes :—
